Description: Grapefruit trees usually grow 16-20 feet tall and have long, thin, dark green leaves. The tree produces white, four-petaled flowers and yellow-orange fruit.

History: The grapefruit tree is a hybrid, first bred in Barbados. It was once referred to as the “forbidden fruit.” It is a descendant of the sweet orange tree, which is itself a hybrid of the pomelo tree. One tale of the fruit’s origin states that a Captain Shaddock brought pomelo seeds to Jamaica, where he bred the fruit. In 1823, the grapefruit was brought to Florida by Count Odet Philippe and was later crossed to create the tangelo and the oroblanco. In the 19th century Kimball Chase Atwood, a wealthy entrepreneur, founded
the Atwood Grapefruit Co. Which eventually became the largest grapefruit grove in the world. It was there that the pink grapefruit was first discovered.
